Always There

Parts of this poem are redacted to protect personal privacy.

A bond we only know,

a mother

and a daughter.

Strength and warmth.

Sometimes stormy.

But we weathered it.

My first bond.

My first friend.

Childhood memories–

you’re always there.

Dancing in the living room

at Hogmanay.

Holidays abroad and

trips to Newquay.

The teenage years–

My confidante.

Ups and downs–

laughs and cries.

Chatting a lot.

Cinema nights

and Pizza Express.

Laughing and joking–

then cold bus rides home.

I learned to drive.

You celebrated me,

before anyone else.

Remember the car chats?

Our own little world.

Our own little therapy.

Spa days and night aways.

Chatting in the sea.

Always right there when I

needed you.

Mother and daughter.

I know that now—

I’ve one of my own.

I understand it all,

now I have her in my arms.

Unconditional love—

just a simple phrase.

But once you really feel it—

it blows you away.

I’m glad that you made it.

I’m glad you got through.

I’m not really sure who I am

without you.

Every part of my life,

you’ve stood with me.

Thank you.

For being my mum.

For being my friend.

For being her gran.

For being you.
